While on the surface this may seem like a good idea, especially when viewed from a standpoint of efficiency, there is a subtle danger which I have seen come to pass in other areas. The process of consolidating services, beyond the joint cooperation of emergency services, eventually leads to consolidation of government itself, even if that is not the original intention. Once this occurs, the small, community based, local governments are swallowed up by the larger, more efficient government unit, almost always for cost effectiveness reasons. The end result, though, is a further separation of citizen and government, which is something we can ill afford. Community governments are, to be sure, less efficient, but they are what this Country was based on for so long, and what made its continued existence for more than 200 years possible.
